Roman Holiday [HOME] [CONTACT US] [FINDING US] |
The roads are very clear and don’t have much traffic. · The Italians were very friendly, helped us on public transport and told us the best sites that were worth visiting. · Most young people in Rome had mopeds as their transport. The ones’ that used public transport didn’t have designated seats, e.g. in London i notice that a lot of youths sit upstairs at the back. · There were many young people that had dogs as pets; the public were not intimidated by this, like they would be in London. · During school hours I never saw any young people on the streets. In Rome I noticed that nearly everyone smokes. In Rome the age in which you leave school is 14, at 14 you can also drive your own motorbike/moped. From asking other young people we found out that the teenage pregnancy rate is very low, as many young people we spoke do not know anyone under the age of 18 who is pregnant. While we were in Italy there was a protest. The protest was done by young people. The reasons were because the Italian government wanted to exclude subjects such as maths, to separate Italian students to other foreign students and to make all pupils pay for their education; this meant that not everyone would get an education. In England however, many students don’t take full advantage of the education system offered. Public schools are free and we learn all the main compulsory subjects.
The youths that we spoke to said that on the news they point out the negative things more than the positive things about young people. I think that youths in Rome have lots of opportunities because they live in a big city, but from talking to young people I find out there have no youth clubs to go to. The youths find it very important that you fit in with the crowd because they don’t want to be teased and bullied. When I asked what they think about England, they said it is ‘violent but cool’. I have noticed a big difference in the ethnicity in Rome. There are very few black and Asian people. In Rome there is a lot of graffiti, more than what there is London. The streets of Rome are very clean unlike London; you don’t see much chewing gum or dog litter on the floor. I enjoyed going to Rome so much. I am happy that I have a youth club because it’s fun also now I know there are no youth clubs in Italy. |
