Summer Project 2009: Me and My Centre
[HOME] [CONTACT US] [FINDING US]Our Summer project was initiated by young people. A few our members suggested that we should alter the way our centre looks. This led to the idea of using young people graffiti skills. Morgan Paton facilitated a series of art workshops. Young people drew sketches, used power tools to cut and shape boards, spraying cans and airbrush to finalise drawings.
The boards are now mounted in the center, its play area and its front.
The programme was complemented with a series of workshops on CV writing, on how to prepare and undergo a job interview. Participants visited businesses and listened to professionals which talked about their own experiences.
The programme was balanced by outings to sea side, participation in a snow camp and sport activities.
This summer Lambeth Endowed Charities supported a placement of a trainee youth leader who worked as a member of staff for the whole scheme.
Pret Academy offered young people a chance to visit and learn about jobs in catering, history and current business of a successful coffee shops chain Pret A Manger. They now know where and how to get a job in Pret.
Nana Ocran led a session on professional journalism and editing through her experience of working for Time Out publication.
Groundwork told young people about jobs in horticulture and where to get trained for it.
Kennedy Imuere, a professional consultant helped young people to improve their CV, and how to succeed in job interview.
